2 IP Addressess

By Abrar Hazarika ·
We are having network of 13 W 98 clients running on a NT4 network. We used dial up to access internet and proxy server for the clients. Now the company is providing internet from their server to our premesis by a 10 baseT cable. They are also givingus a static IP Address.
We dont know where to connect the cable in our HUB. If we configure any of our PC with their IP then that PC is out of our network. How can two IP address co-exist.

Normally, you would install a second NIC in a PC which would be dedicated for this connection. Since the IP address is bound to the NIC, you could have each NIC with their own IP addresses. Through experience, I've found that it's a lot easier if your second NIC is not the same as the first one! Otherwise, it gets real hard knowing which one is which. (This is as applicable to Win9x as it is to WinNT!)

I know people who have had success plugging in their ISP connection directly into the hub,but that's usually frowned upon by the ISP!

If you think about it, your dial up might be going away if they provided you with a 10 baseT Cat 5 cable. I don't think they are going to pay for there lines and yours so they share one and cut the other. You join there network by using the IP address they gave you and plug the wire into any available (preferabily the first or the last).
