What is the exact error you are seeing?

What version of Windows? Assume 98 or Me, but need to know.

Two good DVD programs are Power DVD and Win DVD.

Windows Media Player 9 and 10 can play DVDs in Windows XP with addition of a third party decoder. See link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/getmore/plugins.aspx#DVDDecoder

Usually a GPF message will include the memory address where the fault occurred and the module that caused the fault. Are you positive that no other information is being provided? Trying to troubleshoot a GPF without an address is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.

for error message, windows protection error, if windows 98/me, and you didn't install a new device, then i assume it is software conflict, mostly driver software, if not, then it is a hardware defect, mostly the ram. and software is mostly vga driver, espicially ati rage pro 128
