2 Router, 5 CPU, 2 node? Lost web server

by 2hoc . Updated 22 years, 6 months ago

Hi folks! I know just enough about networking Win2k & Win95-98 machines to hurt myself ever time I turn around 🙁

My home Lan was working fine – all 4 CPU’s saw each other & had Net access via DSL & my Ovislink 4 port router. One CPU is running Win2k w/Apache as my webpage (server?). My ISP assigns dynamic
IP address, so I use DNS2Go’s service so that the server can be found on the Net.

Here’s the problem. My son plays Lan games. He has friends come over w/ their CPU’s. I bought a Dlink
router to handle the extra CPU’s. After alot of trial & error, I managed to get to the point where my 4 CPU’s could see the Net & each other once again (I don’t know how I did this, but it works). Now my “web server” can’t be seen from my Lan or the Net.

Here is the configuration (due to phyical space & layout):

Router#1 (Ovislink) has: a Win2k, a Win98 & router#2 (Dlink)

Router#2 (Dlink) has: a Win2k (the web server) & a Win95.

Router#2 will also have the extra CPU’s for the Lan games. (from Win95 to Win XP)

How do I get my web server back w/o opening it up to the Net (such as using this “DMZ thing”- a term I’ve heard tossed about)?

My webpage/server will be used for my bookmarks & to pass files back & forth between family members (would this be FTP?). I want to use the Dlink router’s website/parental/filter controls for my son & his friends’ CPU’s.

What should be the layout of approx. 6 CPUs & 2 routers (would this be a 2-node lan?)? I want them all to have Net access and to see each other. If you can, a wiring diagram would be very helpful. Could anyone advise me on a good tutorial, or do you have any pointers of how to set this Lan up? Is there is a “DHCP thing” to worry about? Does DNS play a role here? If so, how? As you can see, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you for taking the time to read this “short story”, & thank you very much for helping me with this huge undertaking.
