    2 Servers apps slow!

    Locked

    Hello there,

Hope you days are going well.

    I have a question? a strange question, I think.

    Here it goes…..

We have a 4.11 server P350 Sp8a, 512M Mem, resides under it’s own OU. It holds master of the root & the 2 OU’s. Also have a Nw 5.1 in the tree P450 512M Mem Sp Latest SP. It resides under its own OU. It has a r/w of root & the 2 OU’s.

The servers are in the same building and seem to be working fine “Utilization low etc..”. When a user uses an app on one of the servers OK! But when that same user tries to use another app on another server, both apps become very slow. Once you stop using the other app, it goes back to normal. Even if they use 2 apps on the same server no problem..

    Any ideas.

    Thanks in advance

    Jamiet

      Hi Jamiet

You have missed out information which would be important to help you.

You say that the problem appears to be only apparent when accessing resources in two containers.
How big are these containers? You may need to consider partitioning them, but I can’t tell whether it is a good idea or not, because I don’t know much of your NDS setup.

If it is pretty large, personally I would not have much user activity (i.e. applications) on a server holding Master replicas of the Root. Also I would have a server in the organization container being the master root partition holder, not a server in an OU (again, personal preferences)
There are no right or wrong answers in NDS design, just some better than others (& I don’t know all the answers, I know!)

Also, how are the two servers interconnected? Are they on the same LAN segment, or have you got some slower links in the way (or between the users and one of the servers?)
Does the problem appear always in the same way, e.g.User X uses server A

Hi and thanks for the help.

This is the exact setup of our infrastructure. We have 2 servers in this site, both reside under it’s own Org. One server is a Nw 4.11 Intranetware server, while the other is a Nw 5.1. The 5.1 has
230 subordinates, while the Intranetware has
379subordinates. They are both in the same building, but on different segments. Both
segments have there own switch which are
      linked to each other.
What the problem is: Well we have upgraded
our Nw 3.1x server 3weeks ago to nw 5.1. The users at the time with the 3.1x server could use 2 seperate apps on both servers, and run properly. Meaning using one app on first server, and using another app residing on the second server, runs no problem.
Now if they try the same thing, both apps become slow as a turtle. But if they exit out of one of them, then the other app runs
properly “Dosen’t matter with what app”.
I do have the Org’s as there own partitions,
and I have the Intranetware server holding the master replicas of

My feeling is that when you updated the NW3 server to NW5.1 you probably also changed from IPX/SPX to TCPIP or maybe you didn’t. NW5.1 runs best with TCPIP enabled and used. Also you may need to update the clients on your workstations since the minimum for NW5.1 is much higher than for NW3 or NW4.11.

      Hi.
I agree with gkeel, a protocol problem could be involved here. (you shouldn’t have any basic connectivity or NDS probs, from what you wrote)
Although it is (probably) correct to say the 5.1 runs best on TCP/IP, 4.11 will not run natively on TCP/IP, so you will be stuck with IPX/SPX
You could well have the answer in the client-side settings, as the default installation of C32 is to use IP first, and then IPX.
I suggest that (if you can, even only for troubleshooting) configure both servers to use IPX only, and the clients to use IPX only. If this resolves it, then you have a start. If the clients have to use TCP/IP as well (most likely in this day & age), reintroduce this on the clients ONLY and monitor the results.
Also, check what frame types your servers & clients are using. Ideally, do NOT let the clients “auto-detect”, lock them down to the correct frames (you can have two frame types for different protocols, if you wish).

        HI Roger,

Thanks for the help. We have already taken the ip protocol off of the clients.
But we have Ip on the server so that we can
        access portol etc….
Do you think I should still take off the IP?
