2 versions of outlook on computer - emails go to wrong version of outlook

By xyz125 ·

I just installed OutLook 2003 on my computer(yesterday). I now have 2 versions of Outllok on my computer: Outlook 2003 which was just added: and Outook Express which I have had for a year. I run Windows Xp.

When I receive email messages now, they seem to end up to end up randomly, in either product, but never both products.

eg. my login email from TechRepublic went to Otlook 2003 today. But my Google NewsAlerts today went to Outlook Express.
So, as of now, I don't know when or if I can ever remove Outlook Express from my computer. By the way, I imported all my Outlook Express Messages and Contacts and Folders into 2003 yesterday.

Do you have any insight into this ?

Thank you.

Outlook is part of the M$ Office Suite

by OH Smeg Moderator In reply to 2 versions of outlook on ...

Where as Outlook Express is part of the Windows Platform up till XP finishes.

If both are open then which ever one checks for E Mail will receive that E-Mail and clear the E Mail Server unless you set one to leave all incoming E Mail on the server.

But as it is quite common to have both Outlook & Outlook Express on a system all you need do is only open the one you want to use and do not open the other.

If you imported all of Outlook Express Settings into Outlook you have duplicated the E Mail client and if you have them both open they will fight to collect the E Mail.

If you want to remove Outlook Express all you need do is log in with Administrator Credentials then open the Control Panel and then Add Remove Programs and then when that Window Opens left click on the Add Remove Window Components Tab on the left hand side and scroll down to the Outlook Express and remove the Tick. Then follow the prompts by clicking on Next and when it is finished Outlook Express will no longer be installed on your system.

If you want to use Outlook Express instead of Outlook you will need to know that with every M$ Update Patch Tuesday the default E Mail Client will be switched to Outlook from Outlook Express so after you patch the system every month you'll need to reset Outlook Express to your Default E Mail Client.

Don't forget that if they are set to automatically fetch mail,

it just depends on "who gets there first". You can, say, set on of them to leave messages on the server, and the other to download messages manually only .

You must have left the E-Mail Account properties in both the e-mail Clients. Remove/Delete the Account proeprties in the Client where you don't want your mails to be received.
