20 gb hard drive in Dell GXA

By DonaldA-M ·
I would like to install a larger hard drive (Maxtor 20gb EIDE/ATA133 as a slave in an older Dell. I know that there is no BIOS extension available to support more than 6.4gb. The Maxtor software (latest version, XP compatible) will not recognize thedrive no matter what the jumper settings. Although I can use the Maxtor software to partition and format the drive if installed alone in the system, it is still not recognized afterward by the BIOS. Is there a way I can make this work? I could get asmaller drive, but it's hard to pass up the $10 I paid for the Maxtor new after rebate. Thanks.

Fdisk it and format it in 6 gig partitions. So you create 4 drive mappings out of it 3 6's 1 2gig. Where's the problem? Bios doesn't have to identify it when the drive mastering software overrides. Not that drivemastering is great but it works when you don't have another option. Had to do the same with the 80gig drive I bought, I could only recognize 32 gig so I have 2 32's, a 14 and a 2. Good Luck!

Will it work as master on the secondary controller?

Correction: BIOS does recognized the drive if set as master, but not as slave (I tried bot Master/Slave and CS settings).

The drive mastering software will also not recognize the drive when set as slave (yes, I have double-checked the jumper setting).

Thanks, this was an ideal solution. I could not find a Promise for $20, but did get a controller, which not only got around the bios problem but also allowed me to operated in ATA100 mode instead of 33.
