2000 profiles locked on NT4 server

The server – NT4 PDC SP6a, NTFS
The workstation – 2000 Pro.Sp2 NTFS

When a roaming profile is created on the 2000 w/s and the profile is saved to the NT4 server. The next time the user logs off the w/s it says it cannot save the profile.

On the server – investigations revealed the profile can not be accessed. Permissions on the directory cannot be accessed to see allowed users. Taking ownership can be used but it says it was created by an unknown user account and then allows me to take ownership after a few “yes to all” clicks.

What is the cause and is there a way to prevent it?
