2000 Server Domain Setup with DSL

By ralmendares ·
The current setup is a workgroup with DSL and no server. I now have a server with Windows 2000 Server on it and the dsl is working on it as well. I now want to make a domain with the server. I have 5 static IP's. What do I need to do to configure the server and can I avoid active directory.

2000 Server Domain Setup with DSL

by Joseph Moore In reply to 2000 Server Domain Setup ...

If you only have a Win2K Server, then if you run DCPROMO to promote the server to be a Domain Controller, then that will activate Active Directory.
The only way a Win2K box can be a Domain Controller is with Active Directory. So, if you don't want to deal with AD, then keep your machines in a Workgroup mode, with no Domain Controller.
