I’m not an IT person by trade, but have assumed the role at the private school where I teach.
I’ve built a 13 PC lab that’s served by an older Dell PowerEdge. I’ve installed Win 2003 Server with the following services: DHCP, DNS, WINS, File and Print Server, Active Directory, Terminal Server License, and Terminal Server Manager (or somesuch). Roaming profiles with redirected folders are enabled.
All of the PCs are running XP Pro and are on a local domain.
When students log in, they sometimes cannot connect. Either the error “Cannot find Domain” is given or their profile can’t be found…sometimes it’s a permissions error or they can’t otherwise gain access to the root folder for their roaming profile. They try again later on the same or different computer, then they can.
I’ve just today installed the terminal services features and actived my 15 additional CALs (connections to server, and not device/user). That did not fix the issue.
I’m stuck.
Do I need to invesitgate DNS problems? Are my permissions for the Active Directory/Shared folders for the roaming profiles permissions nixed? Or is it still a CAL issue?
Additional stuff: The DNS, DHCP, and WINS services should be ok. I say this because all computers get served IP addresses and we’re able to connect to the internet.
I’m sorry that I’m unable to volunteer more details as I don’t know the lingo.
