2k connects to XP files but not printer

By tek-dude ·
A friend of mine has 2 computers - XPPro SP2 and 2K Pro SP4. Both computers are on the same workgroup, and can share folders between computers just fine.
BUT - there's always a 'but' - the 2k machine can see the shared usb printer on the XP computer, but can't print to it.
We have checked user accounts - XP is using the username 'admin' with no password, but the administrator account has a password. The 2k computer is logging on as 'Administrator' and uses the same password as the XP computer's Administrator account.
The XP firewall is disabled, simple file sharing is disabled and 'everyone' has full access.
There is no error message - it just takes a couple of minutes for the printer to even go from 'opening' to 'ready' when you highlight it in the printers folder.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Have you gone into the properties of the printer and given it a share name and mark that it can be shared?

along with sharing the printer, you may also need to set it to load Win2k driveras as well.

Thanks for the answers - the printer is already shared as 'Lexmark' and in the properties the win2000 and XP drivers are both installed (it's the same checkbox for both). Also, in permissions, I have given full control to 'everyone' to try to make it connect properly.
The printer works perfectly on the computer it is connected directly to (XP) but even installing it as a network printer on the 2k computer took forever - I browsed to the XP computer through network places, then double-clicked the printer to install it - then waited almost five minutes before being asked if I wanted to install it. This would normally come up within a few seconds. During this time there was sporadic network activity, certainly not what you would expect.
As I said in the original post, sharing folders (both ways) between computers works fine - that's what really has me stumped. Otherwise, I would immediately assume it is an authentication issue - maybe it still is???
Thanks again, Gordon.

Your issue is because of using USB printer port.
I saw before this issue and not always is possible to fix it (depends by the printer manufacturer and drivers).
Solutions:
1. Use the parallel port if it is available on your printer.

2. Install the printer on 2kPro machine, then add a new port \\XPProMachineName\PrinterShareName and change the default port to the new one.

3. Use a networked print server box
