2k with OWA accessing NT 4 Exchange 5.5

By chrisradford2000 ·
I am in need of a good resource or advice on setting up a front end Win 2K IIS server for OWA which will be accessing mailboxes located on a NT 4 SP6 Exchange 5.5 server. Upgrading the the Exchange server is not currently an option and security is a major concern.

Putting "Can't Upgrade" and "Security is a mjor concern" is an unhealthy situation. If you're running NT4 with Exchange 5.5 then you really need to upgrade to maintain a secure environment.

As for the question, as far as I know IIS will need to be running on the same server that is running the Exchange server. Otherwise, there would be no mechanism to forward the web requests to the files responsible for maintaining the mailboxes themselves.

Your best bet would be to install IIS on the NT4 server and hope for the best when it comes to security. Be sure to have a high quality firewall along with reliable anti-virus protection.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the ideas but it is possible to have IIS runing on a separate server. In fact MS recommends that. My problem is that I cannot get the requests to authenticate between the 2000 domain and the NT4 domain. I have heard of instances where user accounts were duplicated on both domains but that creates even more of a security risk than there already is.

Is the 2000 domain running in Native or Mixed mode? Also, is Active Directory running on the 2000 server?

I found some information on the Microsoft KB about this situation. See if this link works:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;300656&Product=ech

If the link doesn't work then do an Advanced Search under Exchange 5.5 for "OWA on Windows 2000".

It might be what you are looking for.

I suggest establishing one-way trusts between the Windows NT and Windows 2000 domains. A one way trust can be established is both directions. See KB315053 for more info.

I have tried both one way and two way trusts neither of which worked.
