2nd Drive impairs system?

by bhawks001 . Updated 24 years, 6 months ago

There was an old (1995) Western Digital-Caviar, EIDE 859 MB HD that I have added for backup purposes as a 2nd drive to my K6-300/64 MB with an existing Fujitsu EIDE 3.24 GB as primary master. The primary slave is daisy chained off the primary masterand connected to controller #1.
After CMOS autodetected the correct CHS values for drive #2 (CHS: 853/16/63), I started the machine and the monitor displayed the initial DOS-processor / HD data, followed by: ?verifying DMI pool?? for which the screen froze without reaching the POST. I rechecked everything: did a warm reboot, and the same message and frozen screen reoccurred. Hence, I?m unable to get to DOS to partition and format the 2nd drive. When 2nd drive strap and power cord are disconnected, the primary master starts up fine and goes right to W98.
One solution source said that sometimes a dissimilar drive manufacturer could cause this and to get another Fujitsu of any size.
Alternatively, connect the CD-ROM strap from controller#2 to the primary slave, and daisy chain the primary master, from controller #1, to the CD-ROM. Then configure the changes in CMOS.
Are these likely solutions to the problem? What else is there? Thanks for your response.
