2nd Hard Drive recognition in WindowsXP

By castlevalleyweb ·
My HD is detected in the BIOS and when I go to the system resources in Windows I can see it but when I try to access it either through MY COMPUTER or "save" it is not recognized.

Has it been partitioned and formatted? Start, control panel, administrative tools, computer management, disk management. You can setup from there.

Is this a new hard drive?

See if it is listed in Drive Manager (part of Administrative tools, Computer Management).

If it is a new drive, you need to partition the drive before Windows can recognize it.

You also need to format the drive before you can save any data to the drive.

Further, did you make sure that the master slave jumpers are set properly on both drives?

I have seen situations where 2 different brands of drives will not function properly together.

If this was an existing drive, and is now inaccessible, I would first look for a virus.

This hard drive has been used before both as a primary and a secondary drive. It has been partitioned and contains files and programs on it that I want to access.

remove the ur bootdrive, and make the "troubled" drive ur master... boot from a 98 CD or 98 bootstiffy... then delete all the partitions, re-create them and format... after that, replace ur original bootdrive, make the "trouble" drive ur slave, and format inside ur OS.
