3 gb of ram in xp 64-bit??? instead of 4 gb

ok. so i bought a new laptop these days that has 4 gb of ram installed. i already knew about the 3gb /4 gb problem with xp 32-bit and so i installed a 64-bit version for xp, expecting to see the whole 4 gb of memory. surprise! the bios and even memory tests say that the whole ram is there. windows refuses to see it. i have read all kinds of forums but first took a tour of microsoft’s site to see if any issues appear there. no one could really tell me what was going on. why am i not seeing what i was suppose too? is the 64-bit version not what it’s supposed to be?
i could really use an answer to that. i have searched a lot before asking this so if anyone can make light in this matter i would forever appreciate it.
