3.5 Floppy Disk

By charles.ldaniel ·
A user of mine had a 3.5 floppy disk that the shutter would not close when extracted from the floppy drive. She taped the shutter closed, inserted the disk into the 3.5 floppy drive, and tried to access the files on the disk. obviously, she would not be able to access the files with the shutter taped shut. She brought the disk to me and asked me to access the files for her on my PC. I was not able to access or see any files on the disk using windows explorer.

Info that it gave me was disk space used (834) and free space was (623). This indicated to me that something was on the disk.

Tried and failed:

Disk copy
accessing thru DOS
system tools in w2k (I was able to recover some file000.chk files.)

Questions:

1. Why can't I access the files after I removed the tape?

2. Is there another way to recover the data.

If the shutter wouldn't close, that indicates physical damage to the disk casing. It is possible that after you removed the tape, the disk drive may not have been able to open the shutter. You might try physically removing the shutter and then trytre-accessing the disk (and dumping the diskette after getting the data off).

If you still can't access any data on the floppy, the physical damage may have extended to the media itself. Barring access to any data recovery software, the data is probably lost (unless you want to spend the bucks to send it to a data recovery service).

In addition to Tims answer if your machine won't read it clearly, try a couple others, I've found calibration can be off a little between machines and sometimes trying a different one will read where another will not. Good Luck! Make sure virus protection is active!!
