Need a little more info

What is the model of these 3Com courier modems? If they are connected by a twisted pair it sounds like a short haul setup, which would probably be configured by dip switch :). Or you could be using these in leased/sync mode in which case I found this -

This brings us to what is it you are trying to communicate with, the modems or the security panel at the end of the connection?

model 3cp3453,it worked for years but I think I got hit with a surge because its making a strange noise, the computer that runs the access system communicates across the modems to the panel

What software is being used on the PC?

Are these DSL modems or analog modems? (what model)

Was this working before, or is this a new install?

Just curious, what sort of distance? (sometimes modems are not needed)

Go to the link I provided and flip to section 16-3

It should do the trick. These were put in as a short haul solution and are treating that 300 feet of cable as a dedicated line from the telco (except in this case you own the cable :)).

Hope this helps!

As an alternative to the short haul modems you could do RS232 over Ethernet

Assuming your security PC is running MS-Windows (for the virtual COM driver) and there is a drop near the security controller this should work -
