3Com NIC/what mode?

By McKayTech ·
I have a couple hundred NT4 clone workstations with 3Com 3C905b network cards and I need to generate a report of how many are set to autonegotiate and how many are set with explicit duplex/speed settings.

These machines do not have SNMP installedso I thought perhaps I could pick up the information from the registry but I have not been able to find the right key.

Any ideas will be appreciated!

3Com NIC/what mode?

Hi Paul,
try hkey_local_machine\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\Class\Net\0000
or anywhere in the "net category, there seem to be a few entries in there dealing with connection topics.
Good luck!

3Com NIC/what mode?

Thanks - I didn't have a Class subkey under ..\\CurrentControlSet but I had been looking in that area so it helped to know I wasn't far off.

As it turns out, the 3c905c has a key called Media that has values like "100Full" but where that information is for the driver for the 3c905b is still a mystery.

But I appreciate the answer you offered!

This is the right area to check, but the subfolder may have a different number, ie 0002..0005 depending on how many adapters have been configured. The descriptor for the info you seek is 'media'. Unless there was a specific reason, all are probably configured for 'AUTO'. This makes it fairly easy to switch them to a 10 or 100 hub on the fly. And it is very rare to find a NIC configured for full duplex unless you know your network hardware uses all eight wires.

For the 3c905b, there is a key called 'MediaType' but the value doesn't change when I reconfigure the card. For the 3c905c there is a value called 'Media' that says '100Full' or whatever and does behave as expected. Hence the mystery.

The situation I've got is that I have about 300 workstations and some unknown number of them were hard-coded to 10/half to work with an ancient hub. We're trying to figure out how much problem we'll have when we cut over to the new Cisco Catalyst4000 later this month.

I've found that 3com 900 series cards have a problem when conecting to an older model 3com SuperStack 500 series hub and are left at auto negotiate. My disconnect rates dropped significantly when the cards were hardcoded to 100/Half or 10.
Rememberif you want to go to 100/Full
every piece of equipment has to be full duplex capable.

There is also apparently a big problem with Cisco switches. We're installing a new switch and we're just trying to figure out how many workstations are going to give us grief. We may just have to assume that they ALL will... :-(

thanks for the info!
