    Hi,
I have a 40gig hard drive (empty) installed on my winnt4.0 workstation computer, and it is connected as a slave to my hard drive.I want to fomat it as ntfs.Is there a way that I could format the 40 gig as the following: 1 partion as 35gig andanother partion as 5gig.When I go into the disk administrator I could only go up to 2gig.I do eventually want to put this drive on a winnt4.0 server to send backup files to and e.t.c……Any help would be appreciated.Thank’s in advance

Sounds like you need to change the file system from FAT to NTFS in the format properties dialog box. 2G is FAT’s limit.

Also make sure that you have sp6a installed.
You will need sp4 or higher in order for nt to see big (>20 GB) HD.

also remember that NT 4 will format FAT then convert to ntfs on boot thus the 2gb limit.
so what I do is use disk administrator on a working NT box create and format from gui

I use Partition Magic myself to setup the ntfs partitions the way I want them.

Agree with Deja Vu,NT will not see Partions larger than 2048mb in FAT16,also in NTFS it
will not see Partitions larger than 8.00 Gigs
Im my setup i have found Service Packs 3 & higher needs to be installed,Thereafter disk administrator will allow you create you choice of partitions, mirror sets or stripe set.Another thought will be you Setup, although you may have auto configuration in you secondary slave where your 40 gig drive is you may need to enable
LBA for large disk support. If that fails(it happened with me on an asus p5a-b mainboard)you boot to setup floppy, run drive integrity
If your mainboard does not support large disk
you can install easy-bios(which i did so nt could see my large disk.I hope this helps &
      good luck.

If you are loading NT 4.0 its very simple. When you reach the screen where you have the option to choose where you want to install the OS and if you want to format it with NTFS. Over here try making the changes and you would be able to have one fourgig partition and once the OS is loaded you can format the rest to what ever size you choose.

In DOS mode use fdisk to create 35Gb and 5Gb partitions. Connect the drive up to the NT system and use disk administrator to format them as NTFS.
