5 books on America

Some of you might remember me from the discussion “Quintessential qualities of an American”. Link:https://www.techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=8&threadID=148397
{did that sentence remind anyone of the character in ‘The Simpsons’ ?}

Now, I invite you to recommend me 5 books that you would say should be on my bookshelf. 5 books on America (USA to be precise for some folks).

I know there are thousands of books and probably little unfair for me to ask you to name just 5 of them. But I want you to do just that 🙂 5 books on American life, culture, politics, religion, history, corporations, philosophy, economics, military….etc. Anything that you feel gives great insight on America and things that shaped the present America.

I plan to look into recommendations and slowly over a period of time buy some of the recommended books. I was browsing a book section this weekend, and saw the books ‘1776’, ‘John Adams’, ‘Benjamin Franklin’, a book on Presidents’ spouses; and my interest was kindled to have a good set of reference books.

Needless to say, thanks in advance.
