SMTP error 503 usually indicates an invalid command sequence, but it could also be caused by incorrect network settings on the workstation.

      Have a look at
      http://8help.ohio-state.edu/33278.html
      and
      http://wso.williams.edu/listserv/eudora-win/Mar1199-Mar2199/msg00007.html

PS If these don’t work, there i ssupposedly a way to reject an answer, leave a comment, and keep the thread open so you don’t have to repost.

The sites listed didn’t help my situation, but they make a good reference for future use.

Well I just telnetted to the SMTP port of that server (208.198.163.2) and it’s response to the EHLO command was “500 command not recognized”. Can Exchange be configured to send a HELO instead of EHLO? (EHLO stands for Extended HELO).

I disabled outbound ESMTP on my server, and it works when sending mail to that server. I did get an interesting message in my log though; “250 Hello leeperderose.com, why did you call yourself mail_server.leeperderose.com”

I still don’t understand why that server won’t take my “EHLO”.

FYI: Disabling ESMTP is in TechNet Q194132.

It sounds like the mail server you are attempting to communicate with is expecting only standard SMTP and your system is sending ESMTP.

Interesting dilemma and I appreciated the chance to take a look at it.

      regards!

See above note. BTW, these two fine people were MUCH more helpful than the people that couldn’t receive my mail!
        (Paul sent numerous emails)
        Thanks again!
