There is not much you can do when software does not work properly with more than 512M

Microsoft has noted this to be a problem when memory is over 128m working with certain applications

Check the motherboard manual to see how much memory is spcified to install on board

There is a known bug in Windows 9X that can cause problems with more than 511MB of RAM installed.

The "work-around" is to force Windows to to ignore enough RAM to not error out.

Check out these 2 Microsoft Knowledge Base articles.
Q184447 - INSUFFICIENT MEMORY TO INITIALIZE Windows
Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed (Q253912)

Just enter the Q number in the Knowledge base search box.

I have noticed this problem to be VERY configuration dependant.

Some systems will work fine with 1GB of RAM, others choke at 512MB.
I limit my W9X boxes to 384MB.
1-256MB, and 1-128MB

While I have not experimented with Me, 98 does seem to operate best at around 192MB of RAM.

I'm running 768MB of SDRAM on my WinME system with no problems, as already mentioned it may well be my on particular configuration which allows it to work fine.

You can try a couple things, first install 512MB of ram, if you boot up fine go into your system configuration utility (start+run & type msconfig), click on the advanced tab & make sure the limit memory box is checked & it reads 512MB, if your having problems change that total to 511MB & reboot.

If it seems fine run it for awhileto be sure. If your fine with the 512MB total you can try adding another 256MB of memory & go back into msconfig & increase the memory limit by small amounts rebooting each time & testing for a while, until you reach a point where you start getting errors.
At which point you could try a program called Cacheman & see if it helps.
