Windows 2000 Server can take 4 GB RAM and an additional 2GB for each dual processer you have installed.
Therefore a computer having 2 CPUs can have up to 6GB RAM when running Windows 2000. If you have 3 CPUs you can have 8GB RAM.

Look into Windows 2000 Advanced Server. This has support for the 8GB right out of the box.

THERE ARE LOTS OF DOC AVAILABLE AT INTERNET TALKING ABOUT NT AND MEMORY.
Windosw NT sp6a WILL recongize up to 4GB of RAm , but it won’t use more than 1 GB unless you have more than 1 processor.

The outstanding solution will be: move to win2K.
      Hope it helps
