95 machine will not save associations

By stacydev ·
We have a Windows 95 machine that will not save file associations. For example, when the user tries to open a PDF file from email it will not open because it doesn't have an association. I go in and establish the association and it works. If I then have the user reboot the problem reappears. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you setting up the association in file types under windows explorer, or are you just clicking on open with...then choosing acrobat? If you're choosing open with, make sure that you check the box that says use this program every time, and if you're setting it up under file types, make sure that you click apply before OK - sometimes Windows gets a little buggy about saving changes if apply is not used...

ANOTHER WAY AROUND. . .

1. Find the file that executes Acrobat or whatever you are trying to associate. (IE, MS Word = winword.exe, etc.)

2. Create a SHORTCUT on the desktop and close all windows.

3. Open My Computer, C-Drive, Windows, Send To folder.

4. Drag the shortcut to Send To folder. Now when you want to open a acrobat file (or whatever you need) simply right click on the file and go to SEND TO, then choose the shortcut you need (in this case, acrobat)

NOTE: If you cannot see the SEND TO folder, make sure your VIEW is set on SHOW ALL FILES, for SEND TO may be a hidded folder, to do this, open My Computer, go to VIEW, FOLDER OPTIONS, VIEW, then look for HIDDEN FILES, and clikc on the SHOW ALL FILES, APPLY, then OK, then start on step 2.

Hope this helps,
Eric

Are thre any profiles associated to the user? We use profiles to stop the users from changing their. If they move the icons around on their desktop, the next time they log in the icons are back where they started! If, when you create the file association and they open another .pdf in the same session and it opens OK, but then you reboot and it doesn't - it seems likely that it has something to do with profiles - otherwise it's the way you're creating the association, and the other posts have answered that one ;-)
