98 clients lose connection to 2k domain

By S.McLeod ·
I have 3 win98 clients that lose connection to the windows 2000 domain after awhile. This did not occur on the old NT domain. Problem takes several hours to occur, then mapped drives will not work and machine must be rebooted.

nothing about going to win2k domain should cause this that i know of...did you also get new wiring/new computers/new nics/new routers/hubs during the upgrade? do you have new 100mb nics talking to old 10mb hub? or, sounds like bad wiring to me. maybe the nic's on the new machines need to be locked down to 10mb half duplex...try that and/or some new wire to one of the problem machines and see if that helps.

I found some similar problems when migrating from MS Small Business Server 4.5 to MS Small Business Server 2000. All the connection problems seem to be caused by the WINS settings on the server. Make sure your WINS settings are pointing to your server and not your ISP's IP info.

I just had that issue at a client site. What I did to resolve the issue was disable the idle disconnect time on the Win2k server. Run the following at the command line of the 2k server.

net config server /autodisconnect:-1

Ref. Q138365

Goodluck.
