Nice article. I tried to apply to some junior positions recently and they demanded that I know a lot of things, not just basics of a language. Unit tests, ajax queries, bunch of frameworks… And when there’s so much competition out there its still pretty hard to get an entry level position.

How do you become a developer?

      by joneonau ·

In reply to A cheat sheet: How to become a developer

I can give you a plan of how you could achieve that.
First of all focus on web development (not everyone agrees on that, but a lot of people say it’s the present and the future)
      Step 1
Simple Website (HTML and CSS) – these are subjectively two easiest coding languages to learn. Also due to the fact that they don’t require buying anything. And the easiest way to learn them is by building a website
      Step 2
Front-End Development (JavaScript) – you can base it on your HTML and CSS website. It will make your website interactive.
      Step 3
Back-End Development (PHP or Rails) – choose PHP OR Ruby on Rails and specialize in it. Generally, developers say PHP is more beginner-friendly. If you can create a website and write both front-end and back-end scripts you become complete developer – it’s achieving the yin and yang of software development.
      Step 4
Build Credibility – prove that you know what you’re doing by building things that you can show to your potential employees
The last thing I can say is: good luck and get yourself a big coffee machine. Sleepless nights are ahead of you, thank God as we all know developers turn coffee into code.

I liked the article. But every newcomer must understand how much time and nerves he must spend in order to achieve some results. This is a very long way.
