A disk read error occured

By Intel Inside Me ·
I have a eMachines M5310. I left on the stairs and my baby sister knock the laptop from the 2nd step. My laptop froze and I restarted it. I wait like 20 sec. and then this popped up: A disk error occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. How can I get my whole system back before I leave on March 29,2006?

Well there are a couple of options here the first would be to pull the HDD fit it to a 2.5 inch USB Caddy and see if you can read in on a different computer. If you can then you have a Hardware problem most likely related to the M'Board in the NB.

If you can not read the drive then it's dead to all intents and purposes so if you drop in a new one of similar size and power specs and reload the system you'll be up and running in the time required to reload the NB. The most common problem with HDD in NB's is that because of rough handling they turn up their toes and die so if you are using any form of mobile device you always need to have a constant Backup available to recover from a dead HDD.

Ok, I somehow got the laptop to say no operation system found
but when I reload the os, xp, It gets a error. The xp disk is
clean. So any hopes I could get my laptop running again
without buying a new harddrive.

If XP isn't loading probably not. But to be on the safe side download the Drive Makers Testing utility and run a test on the HDD to see if it's been damaged. If it comes back with a failure message you know the answer then and there.

The really nasty ones are the ones where you run the Drive Makers Test and it passes and when you attempt to load XP it fails to install so you rerun the testing utility again and it shows up as a Bad HDD.
