A drive accessed randomly

By J9 ·
I have a couple of Win 95 pcs that I support that randomly access the A drive without a request to do so.

Also, during shut down procedure the drive is accessed.

Is there a registy modification I can make to eliminate this?

I had the same problem as well. I found out that it was the Anti virus Software that I had loaded on it. Norton's and F-Prot did the same thing. F-Prot more frequently. You can set the Anti Virus software not to check the A Drive on shutdown and disable anything that checks the A Drive. But this could cause a problem if a disk with a virus on it is inserted.

It does not damage the drive. So it should not be a major problem.

Upgrading the OS also sorts it out. With Windows 98 Second Edition and onwards I never had problems.

Cheers ....

I am running McAfee V-shield and is configured to check upon access which isn't the case here.

Upgrading to 98 is not an option.

This is most of all a nuisance to the user.

Check to see that MS Find Fast is not in the start up and automatically running. Also, clear the recent documents that may be referring to a file on the A drive--go to Start, Settings, Taskbar & Start Menu, Start Menu Programs tab, press the clear button. These two things have been found to cause excessive A drive access. Good luck!

Find fast was not in the startup. However, flushing contents of recently accessed documents seems to have helped.
