A FTP Site

By sabatogz ·
We have ws_ftp installed on our computers and the program is working fine.

We can access all ftp site's with no problem.

Currently we are unable to access a ftp site called "ftp.bnsf.com", also pinging the ftp site gets no response (Firewallmay be blocking pinging) and trace rounting to the ftp site also fails. The ftp site is up and running though, I had a third party validate this and also the ftp site owners said the site is running and other clients can access the web site.

If I sit down at the Wingate proxy server computer and try to access the ftp via the dos ftp access, that works.

Any Ideas?

Thank You
Brian

Try setting all you FTP clients to passive mode. I have found in the past that this works when going across firewalls and proxies.

I am not sure exactly where that option is in ws_ftp, but i am sure you can find it.

Good Luck!

Hmm. I'm able to get to that ftp site as well. It sounds to me like your proxy may be filtering or blocking that site for some reason. I would take a quick peek through your firewall and filter rules and see if there are any problems. Does Wingate keep a security log? It may have some entries as well that can point you in the right direction.

If BNSF is cooperative, they may be willing to doublecheck their firewall rules. What do you use for internal IP addresses? If you use 10.x.x.x or a similar non-routable address, they may be blocking you. In which case if Wingate is doing NAT, it could explain why that computer is getting through but your others cannot.

I ran into a similar problem. When I first set up our home LAN, I used WinRoute and did NAT. Internally, I just borrowed IP addresses from the school I work for. As a result, I could not get to the high school web page or FTP site. Once I changed it to 10.0.0.1 and so forth at home, I was fine.
