A read Only Floppy drive!!

By hratchn ·
Well, we have a floppy drive that only reads, that means we can't write throu it on a diskette. Please consider the followings B4 answering:
1 - The drive works normally on another pc-s
2 - The dikettes used are not write protected.
3 - The operating system shows a successful operation of copying, but when you check on the diskette you find that nothing changed.
4 - When you try to format the diskette, it shows that it is formatting, but after the format finishes, you find nothing changed.
5 - you can't write on a diskette even if you boot the computer with dos.which let us think that the problem is not from the operating system.

So, we would really like to write on diskettes(with that drive, on that pc), if anyone let us know the solution.
OS : W98 SE(if that helps)
Thank you in advance.

Since the drive works OK in another PC, I would consider trying a different FDD cable. It's a cheap enough experiment.

Sorry, but already tried that.
I'll try the other answers, and rate them, since I checked that also(Bios), I'll double check and rate them.

Thank you

have you checked the BIOS. Some Bioses have the option to set your FDD to write protect.
If the same floppy is working on a different system its a known good floppy. Does a different floppy also have the same problem on this system? But since its not allowing you to write in neither windows nor DOS I really think its BIOS related.

IF the FDD came from an older machine and is a 720 the cable must be a 720. If it 1s 1.44 the ribbon cable must be for 1.44. It sounds goofy...BUT...I had one driving me nuts and I couldn't figure it out. the only thing I was moving and testing was the FDD itself. Also the bios on was PC allowed for automaticly changing 720 or 1.44 in the older machine it didn't.

Good Luck...j

I agree with post 2. Check in BIOS under advanced settings and make sure that removable media is not write protected.

#2 has got to be correct. I would also check the bios and make sure that 3.5/1.44 floppy is set as the A: drive
