Development skills for a specific product must be continously updated as the product is upgraded. Although there are still opportunites with companies that have not upgraded to the latest version, job mobility is enhanced with a working knowledge ofthe latest development tools. I think this is especially true with a platform like Oracle. A strong background in Forms and Reports would be very useful when combined with skills in Oracle Designer.

Most collegues I speak with are moving away from C/S and towards a WEB based application environment. Web enabled applications are going to be the way of the future because of the portability and flexibility they offer over Client/Server. I would expect to see may C/S based development platforms jump on the WEB band wagon. Oracle is already touting theirs as WEB enabled. I am not certain of the difficulty of WEB enabling it. I do believe it is an added option to do so with Developer/2000.Thus with the added cost, why would a company want to invest in that additional cost when other products do the same without the added cost?

Please understand that any and all IT skills are valuable. It is largely dependent upon upon what type of expertise you want to develop. Do you want to be a Client/Server developer? The basic skills are ususally very transferable from platform to platform.

Simple analagies are Word vs Word Perfect, or Outlook vs Lotus Notes. The only thing thatdiffers between them
