About NIC Card

by quintar51 In reply to About NIC Card

metric refers to which route to take when having 2 or more routes available.

Let's say you have two networks seperated by 2 routers. In your routing table you'll have 2 routes to that network. Well how does the router know which path to use? both point to the same network.

This is where metric comes in. The lower metric value indicates the preferred route. So one route will have metric of 1 and the other will have a metric of 2.

Let's say route 1 goes down, so then the router will use the route with the higher metric, and in this case, will use route 2.

Makes sense?
