about SATA, eSATA, and hard drives?

I am looking to buy an external drive, but I may just get a regular SATA and then put it in an enclosure.

What I’ve seen from various benchmarks however, is that eSATA seems to be around 150MB/s whereas its supposed to be equal to SATA II at 300MB/s.
Then I thought perhaps it was just the drives.

So my question;

for a SATA harddrive, what is the expected burst output? Is it enough to even saturate a SATA I connection?

Basically, I want to make sure if I run a drive in eSATA it will run just as fast as a internal SATA drive.

Also on that note, is there any major difference between external enclosures? I just want USB 2.0 and eSATA, but do they effect the ability of the drive you put in any, or is more appearance and software?

Thanks!
