AC97 codec issue

By chris webb ·
I am currently sorting out a family members computer and have almost finished repairing it. My last issue with this pc is that it was already built in a shop and my cousin doesn't have a motherboard cd-rom that has the required ac97 codec so has no sound. How do i get around this as the microsoft ac97 update codec doesn't rectify the issue?

The motherboard web site will surely have the files you need for download, since it is integrated.
Do you have yellow exclamation marks in the Device manager? If so, it's possible you also need the chipset software for the PCI controller and all that good stuff.

Open up the box and look for the make and model of the motherboard. The manufacturers website will have the drivers you need.

It is also possible that sound chip on your motherboard doesn't work any more....the cheapest solution to this is to install PCI sound card and disable integrated one in your BIOS....

You will need to download the driver from the M'Board makers web site as this sound device isn't not recognised or has drivers on any Windows OEM or Retail install CD.

While you may already have an AC97 sound driver it might not work with this particular M'Board as some M'Boards address this device differently to others so you'll need the correct driver from the M'Board maker.

If you have an Acer Inspire this is a known problem as well and you'll need to go into the BIOS turn off the On Board sound reboot and then shut down and enter BIOS again and turn it back on. You may also need to change the amount of RAM that is Shared Video RAM from the Default 128 MEG to 64 MEG if you still have the original amount of RAM installed.
