Acceptable boot time

By victor ·
Our classrooms use multiple OS, depending on the class. New loads of Win2K are averaging 4 minutes per boot up on 650 mhz, 256 k, 7200 rpm machines. Because students UEs require a lot of boot ups, 4 minutes is unacceptable. The techs say "buy bigger and faster hardware" but I can't help but wonder if there is a different soloution...........any ideas?

Windows configures itself each and every time you start it up. It always checks every possible location for every possible component before starting, that way it can use its wizard to make your experience with the computer more rewarding and more fun. It checks hundreds and hundreds of files for absolute correctness before it will even attempt to start up. W2k was not made with the classroom environment in mind.
