Access 97 - Multiple users opening same

By dennis ·
I have Office97 installed on my NW5 network and allow multiple users to use Access (within the number of licenses we have). The databases are also on the netwark in a shared folder. The Access documentation says that multilple users can work on the same database at the same time but that is not the case in my install. I have checked all the obvious things, security rights, non-exclusive open, etc. The Databse Jet engine gives me an error if the 2nd person tries to open the database sometingto the effect of "Database already in use by another session". Is this a result of running Access from the network and not from the local machines? Anyone have any ideas?

You've done everything right; just one more step is necessary. You need to replicate the database. Tools menu, Replicate, Create Replica. Assign location (presumably same as original) and you're on your way.

It sounds like one of your users has exclusive access to the database. I suspect that there is some operation being performed that requires exclusive access, or someone checked the "Exclusive" box when they opened the database.

Hopefully, your tables are in a database file separate from the forms and other objects that are generally static (the "front-end"). If not, I strongly recommed that change. Additionally, you should make the front-end database file an MDE file to limit the number of changes in that file. That should keep Netware happy. Lastly, I would implement a transaction based system to better manage multiple activity on your database tables. hhp

I stated I had already checked for exclusive open.
