Access CompanyWeb via intranet

I am trying to access the SharePoint Portal setup through my company intranet and I can’t get the name to resolve. I have tried the microsoft suggestion of chaning the default.htm file links from http://companyweb to the fully qualified domain name with port 444 with no luck either. Has anyone set this up and made this work without the server running DNS?
