C Drive Access Denied Solution (Vista)
by dejoyjm · about 15 years, 2 months ago
In reply to Access Denied
Hi all
After 7 days of painful research, I finally have access back to my C drive.
How did the problem start: I was playing around with security settings-
1. Right clicked C dive
2. Security
3. Edit permissions
4. Authenticated Users
5. I clicked on Deny All for Full control
6. Ok (no no never do it 🙂Since then I had the message access denied to C drive. The problem almost handicaps all normal operation in Vista.
Solution: (While I could solve the problem, I am not fully sure of the order in which I performed the following tasks. So little bit of trail and error might me required)
The key is to
1. Login in safe mode with command prompt
2. In command prompt Type – NET USER Administrator /active:yes
The key is to be able to login as administrator. http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/vista_administrator_activate.htm should give you more clarity. Dont worry if you get an error message, you might have to do some of the following steps.
3. Try NET STOP ProfSvc – this should stop the User profile service and bring you back to the login page – and if you are lucky you will have an Administrator login there. It might not have a password if you did not set up a password when you configured the system.
3. Control Alt Delete, start task manager, Applications, New Task, explorer – this should bring up the start menu etc
4. Start – msconfig – Tools – Disable UAC – the key to get out of this access denied problem is to disable the User Account Control. Dont worry if you get an access denied message here http://www.petri.co.il/disable_uac_in_windows_vista.htm this link explains different ways you can disable UAC. For me the manual editing of Registry worked
5. So again msconfig, tools, Registry Editor and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System. Locate the following value (DWORD): EnableLUA and give it a value of 0.
6. Once UAC is disabled – right click C drive, Security, Advanced, Effective permission (I guess), Authenticated user and Allow all – you might have to play around this step because I do not recall the exact steps.Good Luck

I made the ‘same I/T 101 boo-boo’ you did. Functioning on less than 3hrs. sleep and working on a computer is simply a BAD idea. Anyway, I followed your procedure. It worked beautifully. I was able to reset all the permissions on C: with no problem. Many thanks.

Dude… THANK YOU!!! I’ve been looking for this answer for days now. This happened to my computer at work while I was trying to deny access to a newly created Guest account. It turned on me and denied all accounts access to the C: drive. But this totally fixed it. I also had to go the manual route for disabling the UAC.
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

No guarantees, but try this:
Click Start – Run – CMD and run these :
del /f /q /a c:\autorun.inf;d:\autorun.inf
set key=HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
reg.exe delete “%key%\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C” /f
reg.exe delete “%key%\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\D” /f -
