5509 (Warning) DNS_EVENT_BAD_UPDATE_PACKET
DNS Server encountered invalid UPDATE message from SERVER. Packet was rejected.
I think these messages are being generated on the server when certain W.98 clients are attempting to renew their address leases through DHCP because shortly after they appear, the client receives “Access Denied” when attempting to access resources on the server.
The client symptoms are exactly like what’s described in Q246888 – except we’re not using DFS yet.
Often acces is restored by using Ipconfig to release/renew, sometimes it takes a reboot instead; but usually navigating to the share through Network Neighborhood restores access to all mapped drives on the server instantly. You can always ping the server by name and by IP address successfully.
We have a single W2000 Domain Controller (Active Directory) in this small network, which supports W2000Pro, WNT, and W98SE clients. Only the W98SE clients are having problems. All services are running on this same server. DHCP updates all clients in Active Directory DNS and is a member of the DNSUpdateProxy group. WINS is running on the DC. The server is a WINS client. SP1 is loaded on the server and W2KPro workstations. The only other error messages received from DNS are 4011 messages after rebooting the server. (Apparently we’ll live with this until we get the next DC online and can offload some FSMO roles.)
Don’t know if it’s related or not, but the W2KPro workstations occasionally show a “red x” on mapped server drives in Explorer. Simply clicking on the drive restores access. This has been happening from the beginning, and applied equally to our former NT4 server as well as to the new W2K server – and is a problem I’ve heard techs in other companies mention frequently, though none of us has ever seen anything about it in print.
