    by jamrock ·

My servers W2k Spk4. I am trying to move my users home directory files (I need all permissions to move with the files) to a new server (Server2) when I used Xcopy (Log in as Administrator) some files I get “Access Denied” These files are now in use. Whats the best way to do this.

    Thanks In advance.

You cannot copy profiles of the account you used to login. This means you cannot copy Administrator profiles.
To resolve this, you simply login as an account with Administrative right and then copy the Administrator profiles.

And no matter what, you cannot copy DEFAULT, SAM, SECURITY, SOFTWARE, and SYSTEM files from Config folder.
You need to boot to Repair Console to copy those.

I ran into the same issue not log ago. I found that using Robocopy.exe from the Windows 2003 Server Resource kit much better. It copied everything without a failure. You can use the switch /B to copy files in backup mode. There are many useful switches available. The ones I use most are:
      /E /Z /ZB /COPYALL /LOG:filename

These and hundreds more are describe in the robocopy.doc that is included in the resource kit.

You can download the Resource kit free at

Permissions will be hard to retain just by copying or moving. If you have a backup software you can do your full back up and then do a restore to the new server you are trying copy to.
Another solutions is to do it after hours. That’s the main life of an IT guy.
