Access link to Excel

I have an excel spreadsheet which is linked to an Access database. when trying to modify the spreadsheet data by way of the access table, all i get is a beep. it will not allow anything to be entered. also, as long as the access table is open, I cannot open the spreadsheet externaly. it seems that something is locking the file but I cant figure out what it is. any ideas?
