Access Server

By stngfan1 ·
I'm looking into speeding up our dial-in users.

Looking at a access server that connects to a T1 one line. It comes with modems. What are the modems for? If the user dials up and connects to the server through the T1 line, what do the modems do?

Does the T1 actually go to the modems first, then to the access server for connection to our LAN.

I know modems convert the analog to digital signal and back again. I just don't understand where the modems come into play in this setup.

This question would be better asked to whoever is providing this access server or to your service provider. If I had to guess, what is being called a modem is actually the interface device between the incoming T1 and your network (probably a Data Service Unit (DSU) or Channel Service Unit (CSU)). If a vendor says modem, must people understand that this is some device that connects the incoming data line to a network. If you say DSU or CSU, most people ask what is it and what does it do.

They may be there for backup in case the T1 goes down. I have seen T1 routers that have a modem for backup, also, but the modem doesn't do anything unless the T1 goes down. If you want a definitive answer, you'd have to ask the folks that designedthe server. Hope this helps!
