Accessing a lost\damaged directory

My Dell 4400 wouldn’t work with my PS2\USB keyboard. After trying various methods, and consulting Dell TS, I decided to opt to atempt to repair the damaged Windows XP Pro OS. That didn’t work and Dell TS directed me to delete the partition and reinstall the OS. Not wanting to loose my data, I decided to use a different HD and install a new OS there. After successfully completing that, I go to look on the original HD for my files and (Nothing is there!!) except a 10 GB directory. There should be 60GB?? I’m thinking that somehow the partition IS there I just can’t see it. Can someone suggest something so I can retrive my missing data?
