accessing another computer with dialup

By burff ·
I would like to know how to set up my computer to access another computer's resources using a modem. Both computers use windows 2000 professional. I have configured both computers to dialup and receive. When I dial up the computer, I do not know how to access the other computer's resources (ie disk driver, hard disk, printer). The two computers are connected because I can see the icon indicating communication. So the problem is not in being able to connect to the other computer but I need to know how to configure the resources to be accessed from outside the computer (over a dialup line). Also I would appreciate information on setting up security when I dial up. I currently use Zone Alarm 2 as a firewall. Does the firewall have to beconfigured to allow information to pass between computers?
Thank you

Make sure that on your incoming connection properties you have the appropriate user permissions as well as a networking protocol. Make sure that printer and file sharing is installed. If you want to see the computer you might also enable NetBIOS compatible protocol. I would disable zonealarm while you are setting up this connection, then run it only after it's set up the way you like it. (From there you can configure zonealarm to pass through what you need).

I need to know what the appropriate user permissions are and how to enable netBIOS protocol to be able to see the computer. I have the dialup link established but do not know how to access the other computer's resources.

i would just like to say that TCP/IP protocol should be sufficient over this dialup connection unless you plan on having a small LAN at destination which then NETbios would become appropriate for file and print sharing,i also dont feel that securityis an issue here, baring in mind you will have to configure your firewall for incommng connections

I have this information already, but I need to know how to access the other computer's resources after the dialup link is established.

On each computer you need to share the resource that you are trying to use. Share the printer, share the hard drive, share a directory. When you make the connection you should be able to see the other computer and all shared resources in network neighborhood. The username on computer A must also be recognized on computer B. Sometimes the computer that you wannt to use will not show up in network neighborhood. In that case you can go to START, RUN \\COMPUTERNAME and it should attach to the othercomputer. Also the firewall may get in the way. If you are using TCP/IP for the commo protocol you can tell zonealarm to allow commo with that particular IP address. Hope this helps.
