Accessing CDRom makes the monitor hum

By peter933 ·
My colleague has a new PC with a Toshiba DVD/CD rom and when I access DVDs/CDs it makes the PC hum. Any ideas why?

What is the rotation per minute? Some of these drives are extremely fast, and that can make the pc hum.

Monitor hums can happen with new or old monitors. That too is the result of power flowing through. Sometimes it gets worse when the equipment is too hot, sometimes not.

Accessing CDRom makes the monitor hum

Hi,

The hum can be caused by a number of things.

1. The motor driving the DVD-rom feeds "dirty" power back through your power supply and out to your monitor. Motors do that. You may have noticed situations where a vaccuum cleaner causes your stereo to hiss?

2. The Spinning DVD (which is essentially a disk of aluminium) spinning in a magnetic field (your monitor and all the components in your PC create magnetic fields) causes currents induces which then feedback to your monitor as another magnetic field at just the right frequency to make it hum.

Phew.... To fix - one or more of the below should help...

1. Move your monitor further away from the DVD drive.

2. Dont use the PC's power supply to power the monitor - plug it indirectly to "the wall".

3. Put the DVD-rom in a drive bay that is as far away from the graphic card as possible.

Cheers,
Tim.
