Accessing files on w2k shares

By it ·
I have a small network consisting of a win2k(pro) machine and a WinME machine. On the WinME machine I am able to browse files on the w2k machine but cannot access them. WinME tells me that it 'cannot access the specified device....you may not havethe appropriate permissions'.
If I set the shares to full control I have no problems, but I only want the winME machine to have 'read' permission. It used to work so it is obviously a setting that has been changed recently.

Is the volume formatted as NTFS or FAT?
If it is has been converted to NTFS, then there may be security set up in the security tab which has stopped access.
When you give full control, have you given it to the everyone group?
On the Win2K PC, youshould check that the local user with the same name as the user that is using the WinME PC still has the same name and password in Local security policy because the local user is used to authenticate the WinME PC in a workgroup.

All volumes are formatted as FAT (FAT32).
I am setting access permissions to the everyone group.
On the Win2K PC, I only have the guest and administrator accounts setup. Before enabling the guest account I was unable to access the win2k shares from WinME. However after enabling this I was able to use/access/run programs/files from the win2k machine. So therefore it should work without having a local account with the same name? (the winME machine is used my more than one user and as such has multiple users setup).

Ensure you have a networking client e.g. Client for Microsoft Networks installed onthe me system.

Then create a user account (new one) on the win2k system.

Now when you next boot ME you should get a login prompt, enter the same username as theone you set up on the win2k system, (no password needed).

should work now.

It appears that it remote machines are able to obtain read-only access when only the 'read-only' permission is checked for the 'everyone' group. However it only works as long as 'full access' and 'change' do NOT have checks in either allow or deny. As soon as one of these has a check in the deny checkbox access is totally refused.
