Accessing files

By tarzantu2 ·
I can't open or save a file without waiting 2 1/2 minutes for the files to load. I fixed this problem twice by uding the error checking feature in win xp, but this time it didn't work. There is no problem accessing files in safe mode. I have run virus, spyware, registry, and other programs and defragged. There are some files that couldn't be defragged, but these appear to have been there when everything worked. The problem is the same in my C and slave drives. After bootup, I can click on My Documents and access files, but when I click on MY Computer the flashlight searches for over 2 minutes before the files load. After that I can access 1 file and when I try to access the next file the process starts over again.

there is some program runninf thats eating up either memory or CPU resources.

Try running task master when this happens and find which process is the hog while Windows tries ro load the control panel.

Task Manager is your first step in tracking down the culprit. If this doesn't completely solve the problem, click Start--Run--Msconfig--Start-up tab--uncheck everything except your AV, Spyware and firewall apps--reboot.

If you still have the problem, update your Spyware and AV apps, reboot into Safe Mode--scan with each app (delete anything they find) and rescan with the apps to make sure they dont find anything on the final scan.

If all else fails, backup needed info and reformat/reinstall the OS.
