Accessing NT fileshares from 9x clients

By Brian Cunningham ·
I have file share(s) on a NT server(s) (sometimes a PDC, sometimes a member
server) that I would like to make available to many 9x clients. I can get
this to work only if I create a domain account with the same name as the 9x
Microsoft Networking user name used log in to the 9x client. However I want
to make the file shares available without adding any user accounts to the
domain and without having to add any computers to the domain and without
having to have the 9x clients log in to the NT domain or give some sort of
user name/password upon using the share. In short I want a share that is
"securityless", that is truly available to *everyone*, not just users NT knows
about, a share that works just like a share made by a 9x machine.

I would think you would have no use for NT really. What I do with my W98 clients on laptops who do not authenticate on the NT domain is share the file to everyone and also set the security permissions to everyone. This works for me even though theNT server is on an NT domain and is NTFS.

For some reason this isn't working for me. I have tried Everyone/Full Control, Network/Full Control, and Domain Guests/Full Control. Nothing seems to work. When the 9x client tries to browse the share it gets asked for a password, which is what Iam trying to avoid. When the 9x client tries to just browse the computer (as opposed to just a share) it gets asked for a password to \\SERVERNAME\IPC$. Is there some registry setting I can change to make IPC$ browsable w/o a password? Yes, I agree that from the standpoint of shares I have no need for NT, but for other reasons I am forced to use it.

In network properties, make sure the access control is set to user level.

Thanks, this would probably do it, except that the domain people have turned off anonymous access so when I try to do that the 9x box can't find the domain. I tried a call to MS and they said that i was just out of luck.
