Accessing Printer on wireless network

By thornae ·
I have a Dell 4300 running XP
I also have a Toshiba M70 with centrino wireless capability.

I have successfully networked to the internet through my router.

I am having problems accessing files on my desktop from my laptop and cannot access my printer MFC 3320CN from my laptop.

Maybe I am expecting too much but I thought I could do all of the above once I connected the router.

Any help much appreciated.

You should double check configuration on your router and pc. Regarding the printer , is it a network printer ? if it is a network printer then you should check if you can ping its ip address.

Hope it helps.

well you have to create a workgroup which both the desktop and laptop belong to. you also have to create shares to share. the printer must also be shared out to use it. If both the desktop and laptop have XP SP2 installed you need to configure the firewall to put the subnet that the desktop and laptop belong to in the trusted zone.

Make sure you added the printer to the network. It has to be on there before you can do anything. Make sure you specify what IP address the printer is when you add the printer to your laptop. Print a test page and you should be alright!

Lexmark x9350 - similar problem

by DewdneyS In reply to Accessing Printer on wire ...

I too have a working wireless LAN configured using DHCP on the router. PC, laptop and printer all acquire IPs from the DHCP router and the router can ping all three.

the Laptop and PC can ping each other, but neither can ping the wireless printer

IP addresses are:
Router 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0
Laptop 192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1
PC 192.168.0.4 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1
Printer 192.168.0.3 255.255.255.0 192.168.0.1

All are on the same SSID configured with a working WEP key - as I said router can ping all three wirelessly.

Firewalls are off on both PC and laptop for testing purposes.

Lexmark kindly provide a Wireless config utility which sets the SSID and WEP key, but is unable to connect to the printer wirelessly too.

Any suggestions?

cheers
Simon
