Accessing same e-mail folders from 2 PCs

By JWH/djacobs ·
I have a small Ethernet network (two PCs) with one e-mail account. How can I can configure either Outlook 2000 or Outlook Express so that I will have access to the identical e-mail folders and e-mail messages from either PC?

That depends on whether you need to access the e-mail messages from both PCs at the same time... If you don't need to, sharing the .pst (personal folders) file is probably your best bet. If you do need both computers accessing this information at once, you may want to try Net Folders or a 3rd party utility. Check out http://slipstick.com/outlook/share.htm for more information.

Melody

I had a similar situation in that I wanted all mail for a single account to reside on two computers, the only difference is that the two computers were in two physical locations. I am assuming you are connecting to a POP3 post office. In outlook express you can configure your account to leave messages on the server for a specified amount of time. If you do this both machines will be able to download the messages from the single account. In order to do this go to the properties of the account and then to the advanced tab. At the bottom of the advanced page you will see settings for delivery. Put a check mark in the "Leave a copy of messages on server" and then put a check mark in "Remove from the server after ? Days" where ? is the amount of days you want mail to reside on the server.

The only drawback to what I am suggesting is that sent and deleted will not match, but all incoming mail will be the same on both machines. But this will get you around the sharing problems ofa single mail store. If sharing is not an issue then setting up either a shared PST through Outlook or sharing a single mail store in Outlook express is the answer. In both Outlook and Outlook Express you can specify where you want the mail files stored. If you need help with these settings, please respond.
