Accessing Shared resources on Win98

By gustavo_betancourt ·
I have a laptop running Windows XP and a desktop running Windows 98. I am trying to share resources (folders, files, printers) between the two machines. When I share a Windows XP folder and try to access it from a Windows 98 machine I can access it with no problems. However, when I share a folder or printer on the Windows 98 computer and try to access it from Windows XP, I cannot do it. I can see the computer in "My network places" under the "workgroup" tab, but when I double click it to accessthe shared resources the following error comes up: "\\*computername* is not accessible. You mighn not have permissions to use the network resource. Contact the administrator of the server to find out if you have access permissions. The network pathwas not found." Please advise.

Accessing Shared resources on Win98

On your WinXP box, do this:
Right-click "My Computer"
Click Explore
Tools
Folder Options
Click on the "view" tab
Scroll all the way down & uncheck the "use simple file sharing" check box.

On your Win98 computer, make sure Control Panel --> Users has the WinXP login and password in it's ACL (Access Control List).

My understanding on the XP box, is that "simple" file sharing is really a limited form of one-way sharing... and unfortunately it's the default setting to have this checked. Uncheck it and you should be able to share in both directions.

Thank you for the information. However, that did not help. I figured out that the problem was that the firewall that I had installed in Windows 98 did not completely uninstall when I tried to. I am now able to see the folders in the Windows 98 computer remotely, even with "simple" file sharing enabled.

I didn't go to those web sites (I did write them down for future reference). The part that helped me was when you mentioned the firewall. I made sure that a firewall that was installed in Windows 98 was completely removed from the system. i.e. registry settings etc. I can now share folders in either direction. Thank you
